What a delicious afternoon previewing Umami’s new seasonal menu items and their brand new burger, The Pepperbelly. Each location has created a burger that is exclusive to that particular location and only available at that location. Pasadena’s Pepperbelly is a house beer cheddar stuffed beef patty, umami chili, fritos corn chips, pickled serranos and roasted garlic aioli. YUM! The only thing I would have done differently is added a ton more fritos for the extra crunch and salt. It had just the right amount of kick and the meat was pink and warm. PERFECT!
The “new” seasonal appetizers include Japanese Style Wings, Gochujan & Guava short rib sliders, Butter Corn, Caramelized Brussel Sprouts and a Housemade Pickle Plate. I thought the wings would be a bit more spicy but they were more sweet than bite. The candied orange rind adds a nice bitter flavor. My favorite was the caramelized brussel sprouts which has massive chunks of bacon. Who doesn’t love bacon, right? OMG! The corn was a good addition. They tied the husk into a cute little bow and then cook it. It doesn’t do anything for the flavor but it makes a nice presentation. I need to go back and try the Gochujun & Guava short rib sliders.
I’m saving the best for last! We ordered one more burger that was off the menu but now back on the menu, The Royale. Hands down the tastiest burger I’ve had in a while. Ready for your mouth to water? It’s loaded with braised short rib, truffle aioli, truffle cheese and truffle glaze all on top of a meat patty. I know that sounds like an over load of truffle, but it wasn’t. It was a meat lovers dream.
