Sushi At Its Finest!

September 5, 2012 by Kimlai Yingling

TOMO SUSHI IN BURBANK, CA.

Chef Tomo definitely knows his way around a piece of fish. He’s a sushiologist.  Tomo’s place is small and nestled in between a boba joint and another restaurant in the Burbank Town Center on San Fernando road. It was an easy miss driving by. We were actually heading to another sushi restaurant and walked right by this little hole in the wall. While it was easy to miss it didn’t lack customers. I noticed that every single person (customers and employees) was Asian and the walls were literally covered with $1.00 bills. The “this place is authentic” lightbulb instantly went off and Tomo’s became a MUST TRY! There’s one 6-seat table outside. Inside there are a few 2 and 4 tops and plenty of bar seating. Tomo knew every single person that walked through the door.

Albacore Tuna $3.25
Now this was delicious! The albacore literally melted in my mouth and the homemade ponzo sauce was the perfect flavor to top off this piece of fish. Very light but very tasty!

Spicy Tuna Roll $3.25
This wasn’t just your average spicy tuna roll. There were finely chopped veggies inside that popped out of the top of the roll. Not only was I surprised at how well it was plated it tasted good and the veggies gave it a bit of bitter aftertaste, which I didn’t mind.

Mexican Roll $6.50
This jalapeno in this roll kicked my butt. I was a little leary trying this roll because of the ingredients and thought the jalepeno would take over because of the heat but it didn’t. What it did was add a spice that I felt afterwards. I was able to taste the fresh crabmeat topped with bonito flakes…and then my mouth was on fire! Ha ha. Definitely a must try and a new favorite!

Blue Crab Roll $7.50
There was a ton of blue crab in this roll. I ordered it without mayo. NEVER DO THIS!!!!!! The mayo is what holds it together and keeps it moist. When the chef says you need the mayo…TAKE THE MAYO! I definitely have try this roll again.

MISO SOUP
This was the first time I’ve had miso soup where there was an abundance of tofu and seaweed and it didn’t feel like I was drinking all the salt in the ocean. I normally don’t order miso soup because it’s usually too salty and there isn’t enough substance.

The happy hour menu offered a good selection and good prices but honestly the regular priced rolls were so reasonable that we ordered off the regular menu as well.

GOOD TO KNOW:
Tomo makes his own ponzo sauce and creates rolls that look like masterpieces
Happy Hour is from 4-7pm and many rolls are $3.25
Tomo DOES NOT work on Tuesdays
They take credit card
Plenty of street parking
