To find great Korean food in Houston, Texas, someone would usually have to drive across town to either the designated “Korea Town” or “China Town” areas of town. I’m very excited to say that having to make the long drive to find great Korean food in Houston is over.
A few months ago, I stumbled upon Kobecue in a strip center in the trendy area of town (for the native Houstonians – Richmond and Weslayan). I was excited to see that Korean food was making its way into a non-Asian area of town. Looking at the sign and name of the new restaurant, I figured that Kobecue was going to have a Korean fusion menu. I was curious to discover how they could turn traditional Korean food into a trendy exciting dish for the masses.
Eating at Kobecue is an experience because you are offered the best of both worlds. The menu consists of some traditional Korean food items such as Bibimbap and Mandu and new Korean fusion items such as Kimchi Cheese Fries, Bibimbap Burgers, and Kobecue Short Rib Tacos. Writing about all of these delicious dishes is making me want to jump in my car and drive to Kobecue.
According to owner, David Lee “the most popular item on our menu is the hot sizzling stone bowl bibimbap”. Bibimbap is a traditional Korean dish that is made up of cucumbers, onions, carrots, mushrooms, spinach, sprouts, seaweed, rice, an egg, and your choice of meat. The dish is served in a stone bowl, which cooks the items and melds the dish together to create one delicious meal. [singlepic id=73 w=220 h=140 float=]
I have two favorite dishes at Kobecue. The first personal favorite dish is the Kimchi Cheese Fries. Yes you read that right…I said Kimchi Cheese Fries. At first, I was scared to see how two of my favorite foods from two very different cultures could come together to make a great dish. Wow I am glad I tried the Kimchi Cheese Fries. My 13-year-old niece says that the Kimchi Cheese Fries taste like a “hamburger” quite interesting right?! I think that the mixture of kimchi, cheese, French fries, and the sauce makes this a tasty dish that all brave people should try, at least once. [singlepic id=71 w=220 h=140 float=]
My second favorite dish is the Beef Short Rib Fusion Taco. The Fusion Taco combines a Mexican corn tortilla, cilantro, and onions with a Korean style BBQ meat of your choice. I like the Beef Short Rib Fusion Taco because the taste of the meat reminds me of a traditional Bulgogi dish. To make any dish better at Kobecue, use the Kobecue Bibimbap sauce, which seems to be a mixture of Korean hot sauce (Gochujang), vinegar, and possible sugar, it enhances every dish. Kobecue is a great gateway stop into the realm of Korean food. It is tasty, inexpensive, and a wonderful way to try different parts of Korean cuisine. Whenever you are in Houston, be sure to stop by Kobecue and enjoy Korean cuisine with a twist.
