KCET and Tastemade have created an exhilarating new t.v. series hosted by restauranteur and social activist Chef Roy Choi that highlights complex social issues throughout L.A. neighborhoods. Each episode introduces viewers not only to the breakdown of the food system but showcases organizations and individuals that are making a difference in their communities through food. One of the highlights at the community free screening during L.A. Times Food Bowl was hearing Mar Diego speak during the panel session. Diego was formally incarcerated for drugs and now owns and runs Dough Girl. She gives back to the community by hiring local kids that struggle with drug use and homelessness. Another standout is Father Greg Boyle who created Homeboy Industries. A safe place that breaks down barriers through food. These are two of many examples featured in Broken Bread of individuals making a difference.
The 6-part series premieres tomorrow, May 15th at 8:30 pm on PBS channel KCET in Southern California and on Tastemade TV available on streaming platforms. For a complete episode guide and to learn about the organizations and individuals in each episode click here.
