If you want to know where the President of the United States of America eats in San Francisco, this is it! Obama caused a media frenzy last fall when he dropped by this restaurant in Chinatown for a bite to eat (and photo-op). But who can blame him? This is classic Cantonese food. The shrimp dumplings are quite scrumptious. I always judge a good dumpling by not only how fresh and crunchy the shrimp is but by how thick the skin is. I prefer a thin and light skin, the stuffing should be what I taste most. (At some places, the skin is so thick, I ask “dang, is this a pork dumpling or pork bun?! LOL!). Great Eastern has been around for ages in Chinatown and you’ll see why when you sample their authentic food!

Slanted Door
1 Ferry Bldg, SF
(415) 861-8032
This place is a freakin’ institution! Chef Charles Phan put Asian Fusion back on the map. Asian Fusion is such an over used term now, it’s almost derogatory (ppl serve a weiner drizzled in soy sauce and call it Asian fusion!?) , but Slanted Door is the real deal. So much has been written about their food and Chef Charles Phan’s rise to the top that I won’t bother (Google it, it’s everywhere) but what I will tell you are some tips. It is always packed so it is not easy to get a table, so make reservations is you can via opentable.com. Try to get a table with a view of the SF Bay, it’s fabulous. You’ll impress your date. If you can’t afford it or get a seat, try Out the Door (2 locations), which is the little sister to Slanted Door. It’s not as pricy and easier to get in and food is just as good!

Dosa’s
1700 Fillmore St SF
(415) 441-3672
Centrally located in the city and gorgeously decorated space, Dosa’s is my go-to place for fine Indian Food. It’s one of the favorite places to bring clients. They are always impressed by the top notch food, service and the understated cool ambiance. The space is large enough to host large parties and the bar is a great hang out spot for beautiful SF denizens. The prices and styling are slightly geared towards a western palate but well worth a visit!

The House

You must order the sea bass! Melts in your mouth, and I’m salivating as I type this just thinking about it! You can easily miss this resto as it is kind of tucked away in the North Beach neighborhood. Don’t let that fool you. It fills up very fast. Make reservations, or else you’ll end up waiting 30-45 min. Whereas Slanted Door has a decidedly more Vietnamese influence, The House is more generically Asian fusion….not that that is a bad thing at all! The dishes are equally as compelling.

Hong Kong Lounge
Hong Kong Lounge
5322 Geary Blvd SF
(415) 668-8836
OK, I can not tell you how many dinner, parties, banquets I’ve been to here in my lifetime. My family has been coming to this Hong Kong Lounge for as long as I can remember. I would advise you to come during lunch. You can’t go wrong with the wide array of dim sum. Their selection is way more than the typical shui-mei and sticky buns. Endless carts are pulled up to your table with delicatessens ranging from porridge, to mango pudding, chicken sticky rice and more. (note: If you have your heart set on shark fin soup, they no longer serve it. It has been recently banned in SF.)
