The Taste – My Top 5 Favorite Bites

September 7, 2017 by Kimlai Yingling

THE TASTE LA.

It was another fun filled tasty weekend with Angelenos, chefs, celebrities & restaurateurs and the LA Times. The Taste isn’t just a food festival; it’s a party, a celebration, a family affair, a destination, a date night or a killers girl’s night out. The Paramount lot is such an amazing backdrop for this occasion. I’m always in awe walking past the gates knowing how much history is there. I wonder if there are any ghosts? Okay I totally digressed, back to the festival.

Me and Jonathan Gold

First, it’s a great way to kick off Labor Day weekend. Second, there are tons of cocktails to try, wineries, breweries and small bites from over 20 restaurants throughout LA. You can also pick up some great ideas and recipes plus it’s pretty cool to have everything in one place because you might not try some of the restaurants and wineries unless you saw them at The Taste. GRAB TICKETS HERE

Here are my top five “favorite bites” from the weekend.

#1 FIREFLY

Firefly out did themselves this year by having an edible display. The entire table was loaded with colorful root chips as part of their presentation. Actually, I’m not sure if the chips were meant to be eaten but I couldn’t help myself. I’m a root chip lover so of course, I put em in my mouth! They served Korean skirt steak with chimichurri and Okinawa kimchi. The small bites did get a little lost visually in all the chip tapestry but it all came together and was so delicious. They were also handing out $25 gift certificates. SCORE! They expire in November so make sure to head in before that. GO EAT!

#2 SLAPFISH

This was mouthwatering perfection in all 4 bites. Slapfish was serving up a surf n turf lobster burger that was so juicy and creamy and buttery and well, it was everything.
GO EAT!

#3 ANTONIA LOFASO CATERING

First off how cute is this presentation? I love that it required such little effort to eat it. The steak was perfectly cooked and the fries were crisp and served with a garlic aioli to die for. It was heaven in my mouth. If this is any indication of the food on the menu I’m sold. GO EAT!

#4 PASTA SISTERS

I almost walked past this one and put it on my “come back right before you leave” list because I didn’t want to fill up on pasta because there’s a lot of food and drink to be consumed and pasta always seems to double up in my belly. Fast forward a few seconds, OMG!! Thank god for distractions that made me stop and grab a plate. The pasta, the sauce, the two together made my taste buds go crazy. I couldn’t stop eating it. Then I realized, of course, it’s so dang good because the Pasta Sistas make the pasta FRESH every single day and use all the finest Italian ingredients. Italians always do it best! I want to live in a pasta sisters world. GO EAT!

#5 THE TUCK ROOM

Not all balls are created equal, that’s for sure! Crispy pastrami, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, special sauce and micro parsley all wrapped up in one little bite. I wasn’t expecting this to be so flavorful but it was delicious. All the ingredients went so well together and it had a great crunch with a tasty warm center. Their balls were on point and the side of extra thick bacon was such a flavor BONUS! GO EAT!

And to wash everything down was DON JULIO TEQUILA. I’m always on the look out for the Don Julio airstream. The crew comes up with a variety of cocktails that are interesting, tasty and consistently good. The only stank eye this year for me was that every single cocktail vendor was serving in half the size of cups used in years past, they were literally shot cups except Stella (♥) of course.

That’s a wrap! Cheers until next year.
